Richard Mille RM 17-02 Titanium: A Modern Tourbillon with Old-School RM Character

Richard Mille RM 17-02 Titanium: A Modern Tourbillon with Old-School RM Character

Richard Mille has never needed to play it safe. Known for highly technical movements, futuristic materials and instantly recognisable tonneau-shaped cases, the brand has built some of the most distinctive luxury watches in modern watchmaking.

The Richard Mille RM 17-02 Manual Winding Tourbillon in Grade 5 Titanium brings those qualities together in a watch that feels both contemporary and unmistakably connected to Richard Mille’s early design language.

While many recent Richard Mille releases explore increasingly experimental materials, the RM 17-02 returns to one of the materials most closely associated with the brand: titanium.

A Return to Richard Mille’s Titanium Roots

Before brightly coloured composites and Quartz TPT became synonymous with Richard Mille, titanium played an important role in establishing the brand’s technical aesthetic.

The RM 17-02 was also produced in White Quartz TPT, with that version limited to just 30 pieces. The Grade 5 titanium edition offers a very different personality.

Its brushed metallic finish gives the watch a more understated, industrial appearance while still retaining the bold architecture expected from a Richard Mille.

For collectors familiar with the brand’s earlier pieces, the titanium construction gives the RM 17-02 an almost nostalgic character — a modern Richard Mille with a distinctly classic RM feel.

The Signature Tonneau Case

At the heart of the design is Richard Mille’s signature tonneau-shaped case.

Measuring approximately 40.10mm wide, 48.15mm long and 13.08mm thick, the case delivers substantial wrist presence without relying purely on size.

Grade 5 titanium is particularly suited to Richard Mille’s approach to watchmaking. The material combines strength, corrosion resistance and low weight, allowing the RM 17-02 to maintain its highly technical construction while remaining comparatively lightweight on the wrist.

The watch also offers 50 metres of water resistance.

The Skeletonised RM17-02 Movement

The open architecture of the RM 17-02 immediately draws attention to its manually wound tourbillon movement.

Through the anti-glare sapphire dial, the mechanical components become part of the visual identity of the watch rather than remaining hidden beneath a conventional dial.

The movement provides approximately 70 hours of power reserve, with a dedicated power-reserve indicator allowing the wearer to monitor the remaining energy.

A function selector display is also incorporated into the movement, reflecting Richard Mille’s focus on making mechanical functions visible and interactive.

At the centre of the movement is the tourbillon mechanism, accompanied by a variable-inertia balance wheel and a fast-rotating barrel.

The movement itself measures just 4.65mm thick, demonstrating the level of engineering required to accommodate such complex mechanics within the RM 17-02.

Grade 5 Titanium Meets Blue PVD and 5N Gold

The movement is not purely functional.

Richard Mille uses contrasting finishes and materials throughout the RM 17-02 to turn the calibre into part of the watch’s design.

The bridges feature blue PVD and 5N gold treatments, while the baseplate supporting the tourbillon is machined from Grade 5 titanium and finished with black PVD.

These darker mechanical elements are contrasted by yellow details and numerals across the sapphire dial, adding enough colour to give the RM 17-02 a contemporary character without overwhelming its titanium construction.

The result is a watch that reveals something different depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

Technical Without Being Excessive

Richard Mille is famous for watches that deliberately attract attention, but the RM 17-02 Titanium takes a slightly more restrained approach.

The brushed Grade 5 titanium case creates a cleaner aesthetic than some of the brand’s more colourful composite models, allowing the architecture of the movement to become the main focal point.

It still looks unmistakably like a Richard Mille, but its combination of titanium, skeletonised mechanics and subtle colour accents gives the watch a character that will particularly appeal to collectors drawn to the brand’s earlier design era.
